Open Championship: Day 1

A Slow News Day At Hoylake

Unlike Masters or U.S. Open Mondays, the Monday at the British has to be the slowest day for anything that is actually newsworthy. It must have something to do with the travel or the distance the tournament is away. The ‘big’ news for today was that Phil was on site at Royal Liverpool and therefore he returned the Claret Jug to the R&A after having it for the last 360 days.

Phil Mickelson, British Open

What did Phil do with it? He took pictures with it every where and let Bones do the same. I’m counting the days until a picture of Phil and Bones surfaces with the two of them in a Vegas hot tub with 9 hookers. But seriously, Phil noted that he only had one rule with regard for the jug, don’t put any shitty beverages in it. Phil’s favorite drink from his rental hardware was a 1990 bottle of Romanee Conti, that can cost well north of $20,000.

In other Open Championship news, Justin Rose became the favorite to win according to several Euro book makers. And why shouldn’t he be? He’s fresh off back to back wins on major championship courses (Rose won the Scottish Open yesterday). He has a major. Adam Scott is AWOL. And Rory McIlroy is just as likely to shoot 7 over as he is 7 under. By default, Rose is your guy. Will he win at Hoylake? Don’t bet on it. Right now I’ve got either Stenson or Garcia as my pick and I’ll be sure to let you know my final decision so you can fade me.

Phlop With Phil

Speaking of Phillip, he was in Scotland a week early to defend his Scottish Open title at Royal Aberdeen last week. He played ok and finished strong with a 65 on Sunday, but wasn’t within earshot of catching the red hot Rose. However, as the defending champ, the ad wizards of the Euro Tour put Phil (or at least his likeliness) to work before the championship started to create another phun promotional Euro Tour viral video.

I think I’ve got that shot. Could you have pulled it off? And why use a cut out. That seems like the sort of thing a gambler like Phil would be up for.

Fox Nabs Holly

You know how the White House, the NFL, and several other organizations try to obfuscate bad news by releasing it on Friday when most of the country is drunk or too busy to care? Apparently someone tried to do the same sort of thing to fans of Morning Drive on the Golf Channel when announcing that Ms. Sonders was leaving TGC to work for Fox. It seems as though Holly will work NFL games for Fox as well as the few golf tournaments the new kid on the golf block will be broadcasting. Of course that also includes the U.S. Open starting next year.

Did you see Holly’s playing lesson on the Golf Channel a month or so ago with Greg Norman? It wouldn’t surprise me at all if the Shark was luring her over to Fox throughout the entire filming of that episode. He appeared to be quite fond of her. The Morning Drive has come a long way from its early days with Holly and her then fiance Eric Whateverthefuckhisnameis. I think most of us have forgot that Ahmad Rashad was even on the show as recently as last year. But now that Holly is leaving….ugh….she was the talent. She brought the eyeballs and ratings. Replacing her is going to be difficult.

As for her moving to Fox, she’s going to be great. Trust me, she’s very comfortable being around huge football players. And, I expect Fox to use her in a similar fashion during golf broadcasts. Did you see how Sky used Kirsty Gallacher during the Scottish Open or the BMW Championship at Wentworth? That’s what Fox will do with Holly, and I’ll bet you anything her tits are out. That’s how you bring in more male viewers when Tiger Woods is no sure thing to contend anymore.

Maybe Fox will hire Ben Wright. He and Holly can do a “Playing Lesson” where they try to prove once and for all time if Ben’s contention about why women can’t play better is indeed true!
